In Vancouver, DJ Flipout may be best known for his gig on the Beat 94.5, where he does a 100% live mixshow in studio featuring Top 40 hits for The 5 O’clock Traffic Jam. But before 2006, when he started doing these 250 mixshows a year on the radio, he’d already done a bunch of other stuff. He had published a rap magazine called “elements”, recorded a album with Madchild (from Swollen Members) and battled as a b-boy with his crew, Contents Under Pressure. He also battled MCs on the mic and won. And a couple years ago he battled as a DJ for the first time ever and he did pretty good. More about that later.

As far his radio goes, for two years, Flip’s all hip-hop mix show with Jay Swing was named “Best Mixshow in Canada” by the Canadian Urban Music Industry. That show, “Straight Goods”, was the longest running Hip Hop show on commercial radio in Canada (1998-2006). Flip also handled the interviews for the show with visiting artists, including Kanye West, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and perhaps the most important interview he ever did, Afrika Bambaataa, the Godfather of Hip Hop Culture. This interview became a 2-hour “Straight Goods” classic. As a bonus, Afrika Bambaataa made Flip an honorary member of the Universal Zulu Nation.
When Flipout’s not DJing almost every night at various clubs playing all types of different music and crowds, you might find him on tour. He hasn’t toured as frequently as he’s wanted to because of the steady work in Vancouver and his commitment to radio, where he’s been on the air at The Beat since it’s inception in 2002. He’s proud to have steadily contributed to the Vancouver music scene in the city where he was born and raised. Consistent in-town gigs is a blessing and a curse, of sorts. The blessing is that Flip has gotten to know many visiting DJs over the years and even forged some real friendships. The curse is that he hasn’t had the pleasure of visiting and working in his peer’s scenes abroad. Affectionately known to many of them as the “best mic guy,” when he DJs, Flip is also an exceptionally sound technical DJ and, more importantly, he is known to party hard.
Here’s a list of who he’s opened for (yes, his name was actually on the flyer and he actually played before them. None of these are made up.)
Afrika Bambaataa, Grand Master Flash, Kool DJ Red Alert, Jay Z, Ludacris, Ciara, Biz Markie, Nelly, Mos Def, Ice Cube, Questlove, Z-Trip, Maseo (De La Soul), Pete Rock, Premier, Ali Shaheed Mohammed, Lil Jon, Slum Village, Tha Liks, Jermaine Dupri, Smif N Wessun, and Black Moon.
In 2010, Flipout opted out of hosting the Red Bull 3 Style competition for the 4th straight time at the Commodore. Instead, he entered, competed, and won.
That same year, Flipout was also nominated in four different categories for the STYLUS DJ Awards, including: Radio Mixshow of the Year; Club DJ of the Year; Club MC of the Year; and Vancouver DJ of the Year, which he won. That was a pretty damn good year. The following year, Flipout was named Favorite Local DJ (Westender Best of Vancouver Awards), and then Top 40 DJ of the Year (Clubvibes Vancouver Nightlife Awards) in 2012.
Needless to say, Flipout stays on the grind. These days though, it’s not about weekly residencies but rather monthly gigs that allow him to rock at different venues every week. One of his favourite monthly’s is Saturday nights at Fortune Sound, “Sup Fu.” Another highlight is when Flip gets to play with his brother from another mother, Zak Santiago, forming as LoS (Los Hermanos Libres). Because they are both busy as hell with their individual gigs, this an event and it usually only happens at special one-offs, on tour and/or dope ass mixtapes.
To date, Flip has been to many spots in Canada and internationally he’s played in Spain, Australia, and Puerto Rico. Coming up, he’s set to do a mini east coast tour in July 2013 playing in Toronto and he’s making his DJing debut in New York! WOOP.
