Soundvibration from Bonn (Winner of the “March Massacre” New York 2010).

a sounclash is a musical competition b…etween reggae soundsystems. the tradition of soundclash reaches back until jamaica..s late 50ties, when soundsystems where fighting against each other for the best spot an a corner or a lawn. they played their most exclusive records, to make the audience stick to them and the other sound to pack up and leave the place. of course many supporters were traveling the city to support their local soundsystems.
today soundclashes are more like big show events, but the idea still stood the same: the cowd is the jury and decides which sound is worth to play and who has to pack up and leave.
in a modern clash, an x-amount of sounds play in predefined rounds their best and most exclusive dubplates.
dubplates are exclusivly recorded songs, where the soundsystem tell the artist to change the lyrics to fit in a certain situation, to praise the soundsystem and call the soundsystem..s name. to make theese dubplates more exclusive, the sounds also choose another backingtrack called “riddim” for the song or record combinations of artists, who never did a regular song together. so called custommade dubplates are tunes, wich are specially recorded for a certain soundclash. the artist calls up the name of the competitors, the clash and venue name, or the name of the promoters.
the micman of each soundsystem puts comments on the played tunes, hypes up the place to get a reaction off the crowd and battles the enemies verbally.
in a soundclash after each round, the host asks the audience, wich soundsystem may go further to the next round and who must leave the stage.
the last two sounds reach the finals, the so called “dub fe dub”
in this round, the competitors play their dubplates one by one.
